A pathway to sustainability

Investing in our future

Supporting local businesses, protecting our environment, investing in our community and developing a sustainable future are all part of operating a business.

From choosing where we buy the ingredients for our restaurant dishes, to sourcing guest bathroom amenities and reducing our waste, there are many decisions we make at Ratanui on a daily, weekly and yearly basis that impact the future sustainability of the Lodge and our unique part of the south island of New Zealand.

Supporting Local

Puramahoi Fields organic veg

This is by no means an exhaustive list but these are some of the suppliers that we support and which feature on our restaurant menu.

Ellis Creek Farms - spray free, organic, regenerative pasture raised meat in Golden Bay.

Puramahoi Fields - community supported agriculture supplying organic vegetables in Golden Bay.

Sublime coffee roasters - superb coffee roasted and packed in Nelson.

Willow Creek Farm eggs - traditionally farmed free range eggs from Nelson.

Little River Estate cheese - Upper Moutere.

Add to all of this the fact that we grow seasonal produce in our own gardens including herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, kale, radish, lemons, limes, and blood oranges. Although grown in small quantities, our chefs can make them the champion of a dish or the perfect finishing touch, such as homemade Blood Orange ice cream or tasty pickled radish.

We make everything you see on our menu’s from scratch - including our daily bread which is created from a very mature sourdough starter of which we are very proud.

Our drinks list is chock full of local wines, beers and spirits - we are extremely lucky to have amazing suppliers right on the doorstep - these include:

Mussel Inn

Hop Federation

Dancing Sands Distillery

Kiwi Spirit Distillery

Wines from Resurgence Wines, Rimu Grove Winery, Blackenbrook Wines, Kahurangi Estate, Seifried Estate Winery

7 Deadly Gins

Protecting our Environment

Our own branded body products

Making conscious choices about what we tip down the sink or discard as waste are all part of playing our part in helping to protect the pristine environment of Golden Bay.

  • All of our Bio-Zyme cleaning products are sourced through a locally owned and operated company in Nelson, these cleaning products are are certified organic, biodegradable and non-toxic, reducing the disposal of chemicals back into the system. The company also supply us with compostable rubbish bags and bio-degradable dishwashing liquid.

  • Our water supply is rain water which is collected from our roof into tanks on site and then passed through UV filters to ensure that it is potable and safe for human consumption.

  • Our guest room amenities are also eco-friendly and locally sourced:

Clean Earth Soaps are little handmade olive oil soaps and are locally made in Golden Bay.

Jeymar Soap & Body is a family owned business operating just across the hills in Marlborough. They use organic ingredients and create wonderful fragrant and gentle products.

WORKING TO REDUCE OUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION & OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Our Lodge went through a major refurbishment in the winter of 2021 and took the opportunity to introduce some additional energy saving features including installing LED lighting throughout the property including our bedside table lamps.

The Lodge is double-glazed and insulated and we have installed energy efficient heat pumps to replace the previous plug-in heating.

We compost all of our kitchen waste in our own compost bins and we ensure that glass is recycled or returned to the supplier where possible. Guests are supplied with small glass bottles of milk for their cuppa and the ground coffee in the guest rooms is supplied in a glass jar saving on packaging.

Packed lunches come in paper bags and we opt to use bamboo packaging where possible. Having suppliers who actively reduce the amount of packaging that they supply our goods in is also important to us.

INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Pohara and the surrounding villages and towns in Golden Bay are small rural communities and we rely on each other to provide support not just in times of crisis but all year round. It is important to us to support local and we work with a number of local organizations including Helping Hands and support fun events like the annual Pohara Sandcastle competition.
