Walks

Golden Bay offers an array of walks, from a leisurely 20 minute bush stroll at The Grove, to a full mountain climb at Parapara Peak, and of course easy access to the most scenic and least crowded parts of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track.

Wainui Falls

Wainui Falls

Wainui Falls:  1 hour.  Beautiful walk through native bush, following the Wainui River.  Cross a swing bridge to the thundering falls.

Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman Coastal Track:  1-6 hours. Accessible from either Wainui, Totaranui, or via water taxi, the Abel Tasman Coastal Track is one of New Zealand’s great walks.  Make a day trip with access to pristine golden sand beaches and native bush.

Rawhiti Cave

Rawhiti Cave:   1.5 hours.  Follow a dry stream bed to a switch back trail in a steep valley to the gaping mouth of Rawhiti Cave, dripping with stalactites and stalagmites.

Wharawharangi

Totaranui to Wainui:  Allow 6 hours.  The under-explored, most scenic part of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track.  Secluded golden beaches, native bush, seals at Separation Point, and bus service to make it a one-way walk.

The Grove:  20 min – 1 hour.  Short,easy, and dramatic, The Grove track wanders through towering nikau palms and rata trees, past unusual rock formations, and ends with a lookout over Golden Bay.

Wharariki

Wharariki Beach

Wharariki Beach:   2-5 hours. New Zealand’s most dramatic beach, with rock arches in the surf, seal pups playing in tidal pools, and windswept sand dunes.  Connect to Cape Farewell, the cliffs at the northern-most point on the South Island.  1 hour and 15 minutes from Ratanui

Pupu Springs

 Pupu Springs:  1 hour. Pupu Springs boasts the second clearest water in the world, and there are lovely, easy walking tracks in place for viewing.  10 minutes from Ratanui

Pupu Hydro

Pupu Hydro

 Pupu Hydro Walk:  1.5 hours.  The Pupu Hydro Walk (1 .5 hours) follows an old working hydro scheme up the hill behind Pupu Springs.  After climbing the hill, follow the water races and admire the views over Golden Bay.  15 minutes from Ratanui
